Erasmus+ Grant

Update on the Erasmus+ Programme.

Following the Brexit negotiations, the UK Government is not seeking to associate to the next Erasmus programme.  However, The University of Manchester has secured funding under the existing Erasmus+ programme support some placements in 2022/23 - if funding is limited then funding allocations will be prioritised based on financial need. No Erasmus+ funding will be available for the 2023/24 academic year and beyond.

Study

Erasmus+ (European) grant

If you are undertaking a study placement at one of The University of Manchester’s partner institutions within the EU (but outside of the UK) for a minimum of three months as part of your degree, you are currently eligible for an Erasmus+ grant, funded by the European Commission. All registered students at The University of Manchester are currently eligible for this funding provided that their placement is full-time. This grant is a contribution towards the increased costs of taking up a study placement overseas. In recent years the grant rate has not typically been less than €300 per month.

If your household income is below £35,000.00 per year, you are currently also eligible for additional funding – like the main Erasmus+ funding, this is a grant to help support you while you are studying abroad in a country which is part of the Erasmus+ programme.  As above, this can vary from year-to-year but in recent years it has not been less than an extra €100 per month.  UK students don’t need to apply specifically for this funding – the University of Manchester Erasmus+ team checks each year whether or not you are eligible to receive this funding. If you are an EU or International student and believe you may be eligible for additional funding due to a low household income, you should contact us to assess your eligibility at erasmus@manchester.ac.uk If you are eligible, it will be automatically added to the grant payments we make to you. This applies to all students.  The criterion for eligibility is your household income in the preceding academic year – if you have had a significant change of circumstances and your household income in the year of your placement is going to be £35,000.00 per year or less then please contact us to discuss this: erasmus@manchester.ac.uk

In addition to the Erasmus+ grant you may be eligible for up to £300 towards a language course for the language of your host country. The language course should take place before or during your Erasmus+ European placement. Students who study a language as part of their degree programme are not eligible for this language course funding.

Additional Erasmus+ funding is available for students undertaking an Erasmus+ placement who have a disability or health condition. This is an additional support fund which is paid in additional to the main grant. It is designed to support students for whom going abroad will incur additional costs as a direct result of their disability or health condition. Examples of costs that can be considered under this funding include, but are not limited to: Mental health mentoring via Skype, additional costs for adapted rooms, supportive equipment, adaptation of learning materials, an accompanying person etc. For more information about this funding including eligibility and how to apply, please contact erasmus@manchester.ac.uk

You may not be eligible for an Erasmus+ grant, or may only be able to receive a reduced grant, if you have previously received Erasmus funding for an overseas placement. If you are a postgraduate student and have previously received Erasmus funding for an placement as part of an undergraduate degree, then this does not apply.

The Erasmus+ grant is paid using a MasterCard Cash Passport travel money card. A card will be registered and given to you prior to your placement starting.

All undergraduate students undertaking an international placement will have an application in My Placement.  You will automatically receive information and paperwork about the Erasmus+ grant through the system prior to the commencement of your placement.  If you don't have a record within My Placement, you should contact erasmus@manchester.ac.uk or the Placement Coordinator within your School.

All students undertaking an Erasmus+ placement are required to attend an Erasmus+ Explained pre-departure briefing. At this briefing, you will receive all the information about grant eligibility, forms to be completed and the relevant deadlines, grant amounts and the payment schedule, and the MasterCard Cash Passport.
