Admissions Overview and Important Dates

Registration

All students must complete online registration prior to their departure for the UK. Registration is your central activation of your administrative record, which pre-creates your Student ID card - it has nothing to do with course unit enrolment.

Registration opens on the first day of the calendar month in which your programme begins – if you are joining us in September, you will be able to complete online registration from 1 September, and if you are joining us in January, you can complete it from 1 January. Do NOT attempt to register earlier than these dates – it will not work.

There are two online registration processes which you must complete:

  1. IT Set-Up

  2. Academic and Financial Registration

Details of these processes can be found via this link: http://www.welcome.manchester.ac.uk/new-students/get-ready/

1. IT Set-Up:

Before you can access the system which will allow you to complete Academic and Financial Registration you will need to set up your IT account. Information about this process can be found here: https://iam.manchester.ac.uk/initial_login/overview. You can do this at any time. Most of you will have already done this earlier in the admissions process.

You can access the portal to set up you IT Account here: IT Account Manager.

Additionally, there’s a help page here: Applicant self-service help | The University of Manchester

2. Academic and Financial Registration:

The Academic and Financial Registration process can be accessed via this link: http://www.welcome.manchester.ac.uk/new-students/get-ready/.

We recommend you put a reminder in your calendar to alert you to complete this process when it’s due - if you join us in September, it is available from 1 September, and if you join us in January, it is from 1 January.

If you are paying fees directly to The University of Manchester, please see the attached Billing Procedures.

If you are an exchange student OR have your fees paid by a third party you will still need to complete both Academic Registration and Financial Registration. The system should recognise, however, that no fees are due and let you proceed to the end.

During the online registration process, you will be able to upload a photo, which will enable you to collect your student card after your arrival.

PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO ACCESS THE ONLINE REGISTRATION SERVICE BEFORE 1 SEPTEMBER (for September entrants) or 1 JANUARY (for January entrants). IT MAY NOT WORK PRIOR TO THIS DATE.

If you experience any problems with completing on-line registration, please contact Student Services on +44 (0)161 306 5544 (9.00am-5.00pm, Monday to Friday).

Tuition Fees

Your tuition fee is stated in your Offer letter. If you are paying tuition fees to the University of Manchester, please see the 'Billing Procedures' document.

Exchange Students only – your Offer Letter may show a tuition fee of 0.01p. You can disregard this – it is simply a system default. Students joining us under a reciprocal exchange agreement do not pay their tuition fees to Manchester.

Important Dates

1. Pre Departure Briefing

We deliver online Pre-Departure Briefings in the month before you join us. We will send you the links in the weeks before the sessions.

2. Arrival date

If you are living in university housing, most contracts will start between 2-8 days before the start of semester – please check your individual contract to be sure. This will be the date upon which you can arrive and move into your residence – if you arrive in advance of this date you will usually need to arrange hotel accommodation for the days ahead of this.

Note that the Accommodation Office usually send housing contracts out in August (for September arrivals) and December (for January arrivals).

3. University Orientation, Welcome and Transition week

The University of Manchester’s International Orientation programme has a mix of online and in-person events. We will send you your schedule the week before Welcome Week begins. Many sessions will be asynchronous (meaning you can complete at any time). However, there will be a compulsory synchronous Induction session which you MUST attend online – we will send you the link in advance. This session will cover course unit changes. Other sessions throughout the week will help you prepare for a different academic system.

4. Semester Dates

Key dates at The University of Manchester

We recommend students aim to remain in Manchester until the end of the semester, as it is sometimes possible for exams to be moved to a later date than their original schedule. Semester 1 examination timetables are released in early December, and Semester 2  timetables are released in April.

Semester 1 attendance after Christmas:

If you are joining us for semester 1 (Sept-Jan) only, and your home university’s subsequent semester begins before the end of Manchester’s semester 1 assessment period (i.e. late January) it MAY be possible for you to apply to undertake an alternative form of assessment before the Christmas break.

Many disciplines offer alternative assessment, but you must check the document accessed via this link: https://www.manchester.ac.uk/study/international/study-abroad-exchange/unit-search/ to check that your choices are covered. For example, Economics, Engineering/Physical Science and some languages and Psychology units do not.

If you wish to apply for alternative assessment, your home university’s International Programmes Office/Office of International Programmes must sign a ‘Autumn Assessment Approval Form’ to confirm that it is necessary for you to return home before the end of Manchester’s semester 1 due to a clash of semester dates. This form can be found here: https://www.manchester.ac.uk/study/international/study-abroad-exchange/applications/ (You do not need to submit this form again if you submitted it with your original application).

Remember that if you are studying any course unit in a discipline that does not offer alternative assessment you will be required to undertake the normal assessment for that course unit and all other course units in January.

Please Note:

  • If there is no clash between the semester dates at Manchester and your home university, you are expected to remain in (or return to) Manchester until the end of semester 1 in order to sit your examinations. No special arrangements will be made for early departure for any reason other than a clash of dates.
  • Alternative assessment is to replace the requirement to attend an in-person, on-campus exam in January. If the standard assessment is an online exam, you will not be offered an alternative to this. Remember that if it is a synchronous exam you may need to complete it at an odd time depending on the timezone of your home country, and it may be scheduled to take place after your classes back home have already begun. There is no mitigation possible for this.

ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT IS NOT AVAILABLE TO ANY STUDENT STUDYING WITH US FOR THE FULL ACADEMIC YEAR (i.e. from SEPTEMBER to JUNE). All students whose period of study with us ends in June must sit all their scheduled examinations in January and June.

If you are joining us in Semester 2 (Jan-June), please make sure you do not arrange any work/placements/internships etc. back home before the end of the semester, because if in person examinations take place for your course units, you will be required to sit those in Manchester. You will sit the standard assessments for all your course units. Do NOT ask if you can have an earlier/alternative form of assessment.

Transcript Issue Dates - Important information

Official Transcripts are not issued for ANY students until early August. Students studying with us for semester 1 only will receive an ‘Interim’ transcript in March/April, and will then receive an ‘Official’ transcript in early August, but it is not possible under ANY circumstances for ANY student to receive an Official Transcript earlier than early August. If this will affect your ability to graduate (particularly if you will be joining us in your final year of study), or take up employment etc, you MUST discuss the impact with your home university, to determine whether they can provide any mitigation/contingencies for this. If they cannot, you should consider the impact to help you decide whether to proceed. There is NO possibility of Official Transcripts being available earlier than early August.
