Departure FAQs

  • I originally intended to study here for one semester only, but would like to extend to a full year.  Is this possible?

Fee-paying Study Abroad students are permitted to extend their period of study (providing their home university approves this) without any further confirmation of the availability of places. Fee-paying students should simply notify the IPO of their intention to remain for a further semester. Worldwide exchange students, however, join the University on a ‘balance’ basis, and so it is not always possible for the period of study to be extended. Discussions will be required with our exchange partner to determine whether places are available or whether the exchange place that this extension would occupy has already been allocated to a future student.

Extending your study may also have visa implications. The University’s Visa and Immigration Team should be consulted if you have any questions about visas. They are located in the Student Services Centre in the John Owens Building and their email address is visa@manchester.ac.uk.

Please note that the International Programmes Office (IPO) cannot provide any advice on visas directly.

  • How will my grades transfer back to my home university?

It is your home university’s responsibility to decide how the marks you earn at Manchester will transfer back to your main degree programme. Some universities allow their students to study abroad on a Pass/Fail basis (meaning the marks you earn at Manchester will not affect your home GPA), whilst others may convert the grades you earn at Manchester so that they appear on your home university transcript and are factored into your overall GPA. You must check this with your home university. The International Programmes Office at Manchester cannot advise how your home university will transfer your grades.

  • Are there any logistical arrangements I need to take care of before I leave?

Housing/Accommodation - Please make sure that you check with the main reception for your residence hall as to the arrangements for checking-out/returning keys.  Detailed arrangements tend to vary from residence to residence.  You should ensure in all cases that you leave your room clean and tidy and that it is locked as you leave.  In most cases you will need to return your keys to the main reception for your residence and there will be some form of box for key return if you are leaving outside of office hours.  Unreturned keys will incur a charge!! If you leave outside of office hours and deposit your keys in the designated box, please also send an email as soon as possible afterwards to accommodation@manchester.ac.uk with the following information:

Name

Room number

Residence Hall

Date and location where keys were deposited

Don’t forget also to return any outstanding Library books.
